Julianna Barwick

Magic Place
Brookyn based Julianna Barwick has just released a new album called 'The Magic Place' on the Asthmatic Kitty label. It is a collection of 9 hauntingly sublime songs that create a melancholy mood throughout; with loop based vocal arrangements and harmonies and is a type of music that is difficult to categorize.
Barwick's style first emerged from experimenting with a guitar effects pedal that had a loop feature, this developed her idea onto mixing her voice to create a unique choral sound. Here is an example of one of the songs called 'Bob In Your Gait' from the album played live here at the SXSW festival in Texas last March..

'The Magic Place' is one of those albums that may sound odd on first listen but becomes an addictive, chillout experience after repeated plays and is certainly one of the finest releases of new music this year.
Julianna Barwick has been added to my list of artistes that I want to go and see play live in the not too distant future because I believe her live shows would add even more to these outstanding songs on the album. I will certainly be on the lookout for possible forthcoming European dates..
