DM Stith is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who hails from Buffalo, New York, and to date has two albums entitled 'Heavy Ghost' and 'Heavy Ghost Appendices' which can be found on the Asthmatic Kitty label. I was lucky enough to see him play on Tuesday night last when he did a support slot for Sufjan Stevens in Dublin. He is also part of Sufjan Steven's latest ensemble on his 'Age Of Adz' tour, playing keyboards, guitar and backing vocals. Stith is a talent all on his own and captured the audience's attention intensely as he played 4 songs solo with just an acoustic guitar and some loop effects. Surely Nick Drake is one of Stith's influences, although I have no proof of this but I would be more than surprised if he didn't have Drake's 'Pink Moon' record for instance in his collection. I am sure also that it wouldn't be an overstatement to suggest that Tim Buckley could be an influence on his music.
One of the joys of live music is witnessing a performer for the first time, without ever knowing anything previously about them and discovering something as wonderful as this, DM Stith is no exception. His songs develop into glorious rich melodies carried along with a limitless vocal range. This is one of the songs he played last Tuesday night in Dublin called 'Morning Glory Cloud', it can be found on the 'Heavy Ghost' album. The looping effects add an almost full band sound to this which makes it pretty unique. I would highly recommend anyone to go see for themselves the talents of this man wherever the opportunity arises...
